NYSTRS retirement chart

What share of your final average salary NYSTRS pays at each age and length of service, worked out from the plan's published rules.

Pension factor × age factor × final average salary · Checked against NYSTRS's published rules · November 2026

NYSTRS Tier 6 pays 1.67% a year under 20 years, 35% at 20 years and 2% for each year after that. The benefit is unreduced from age 63, or from 58 with 30 years. Earlier retirements, marked with an asterisk, are reduced by the plan’s Tier 6 age factor, so the real figure is lower. Tier 4 uses 2% a year from 20 to 30 years and 1.5% after.

Percent of final average salary, before tax and before any survivor-option reduction. Green cells are unreduced. An asterisk means the plan applies its own early-retirement table, so the amount you receive is lower than the figure shown. A dash means you cannot retire yet at that age and service.

Turning a percentage into dollars

Multiply the percentage by your final average salary and divide by twelve. At 60% of an $80,000 average, the pension is $48,000 a year, or $4,000 a month. Highest three consecutive school years of salary (Tier 6 has limits on what pay counts). The NYSTRS calculator does the arithmetic for any age, service and salary, and the pension by years table shows monthly amounts at common salaries.

How to use the chart

Find your expected service in the columns and read down to see how the benefit changes as you wait. The jump from one row to the next shows what an extra year at work is worth. When a whole row turns green, that age is unreduced for that service. To find the exact day you reach it, use the retirement date finder.
