Texas TRS retirement chart

What share of your final average salary Texas TRS pays at each age and length of service, worked out from the plan's published rules.

2.3% × years of service × average of your highest 5 salaries · Checked against Texas TRS's published rules · November 2026

Texas TRS pays 2.3% of your five-year average salary for each year of service. The table turns unreduced once you meet the Rule of 80, or reach 65 with five years, and for members in the later tiers also the minimum age of 60 or 62. Below the minimum age with the Rule of 80 met, TRS cuts 5% for each year short. Cells marked with an asterisk are early-age retirements where TRS applies its own actuarial reduction table, so the real figure is lower than shown.

Percent of final average salary, before tax and before any survivor-option reduction. Green cells are unreduced. An asterisk means the plan applies its own early-retirement table, so the amount you receive is lower than the figure shown. A dash means you cannot retire yet at that age and service.

Turning a percentage into dollars

Multiply the percentage by your final average salary and divide by twelve. At 60% of an $80,000 average, the pension is $48,000 a year, or $4,000 a month. Average of your five highest annual salaries. Members grandfathered in 2005 use their three highest. The Texas TRS calculator does the arithmetic for any age, service and salary, and the pension by years table shows monthly amounts at common salaries.

How to use the chart

Find your expected service in the columns and read down to see how the benefit changes as you wait. The jump from one row to the next shows what an extra year at work is worth. When a whole row turns green, that age is unreduced for that service. To find the exact day you reach it, use the retirement date finder.
